Today in TR's life
A rotating widget for trlibrary.com. It cycles through what Roosevelt was doing on today's date across his life, biggest days first, shown in year order. Each slide links to the full day. It works the same way as the visitor-quotes widget: one tag, four layouts, and it reads its background to choose light or dark text.
<div data-trpl-today data-layout="banner"></div> <script src="https://daybyday.labs.trlibrary.com/widgets/today.js" async></script>
Banner
One year at a time, centered, changing every nine seconds. It reserves the height of the longest entry, so rotation never moves the rest of the page. Rotation pauses on hover or keyboard focus, when scrolled out of view, in a background tab, and for visitors who ask for reduced motion.
Card
The same rotation in a bordered panel, for a sidebar or column.
<div data-trpl-today data-layout="card"></div>
Wall
Three years at once, no rotation. Set data-count for more.
<div data-trpl-today data-layout="wall" data-count="3"></div>
Inline
A quiet rule-left version for the flow of a page.
<div data-trpl-today data-layout="inline"></div>
On any background
Nothing below is configured differently. On a photo or video section it switches to white text with a soft shadow. If a Drupal section hides its color from the widget, say what you want: data-text="white" or data-text="dark".
Options
| Attribute | What it does |
|---|---|
data-layout | banner (default), card, wall, inline |
data-date | Show a fixed date instead of today, as MM-DD, e.g. 10-27 for his birthday |
data-count | How many years to cycle through (default 6; wall 3) |
data-min | Only include days at or above this significance, 1–5 (default 1) |
data-interval | Seconds between slides; 0 turns rotation off (default 9) |
data-text / data-theme | Force white or dark text, or name the background as light or dark |
data-align | left or center |
data-height | auto lets the block resize with each slide (default fixed) |
data-cta | off hides the “Plan your visit” link |
Roosevelt's own words are left out of the rotation until each quotation is verified against the original letter, diary or speech.
